Abbye Elizabeth Cross, age 95, a resident of The Cove at Wilora Lake in Charlotte, NC, died on October 10, 2013.  She was the 4th of six children born to Michael C Riley and Daisy McDowell Riley on October 6, 1918 in Bluffton, South Carolina.  After graduating from High School, Abbye attended Georgia State Industrial College in Savannah, Georgia, now referred to as Savannah State College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics.  Abbye then returned to Bluffton, SC and taught at Bluffton Grade School.    

   In the mid-1940s, Abbye relocated to New York City, NY to live with family.  During the summer months, she worked at the resort area of Asbury Park, NJ.  Later she began working at the Veterans Administration in NYC where she met Edward B. Cross of Haynes, AK. On December 21st, 1947 they were married at the Abyssinian Baptist Church by Reverend Adam Clayton Powell, Sr.

   In the course of her marriage, Abbye traveled the globe in support of her husband’s career while jointly raising a family and holding positions as a Dietician and later as a Substitute Teacher over the years.

   Abbye and Edward lived in Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, Boston, MA, Seattle WA, San Francisco, CA, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Detroit, MI, Shawnee Mission, KS, Dallas, TX and Charlotte, NC and traveled extensively, exposing their children to the world.

   During the time that her husband worked for the State Department, Abbye demonstrated her wonderful hospitality skills, hosting formal dinners and functions for ambassadors and other dignitaries.

   Abbye loved to entertain and would often have gatherings and parties for family and friends wherever she resided.  No one was ever a stranger in her house.  Abbye’s home was always open to all, where she provided great food, drink, dance, company, and laughter.

   Abbye was predeceased by her husband, Edward B. Cross and her 5 siblings; Louise Thomas, Sylvia Walker, John Riley, Sara Riley Hooks, and Michael McDowell Riley.  She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses:  Zina C. Garrin-Cross (Neil Garrin) of Takoma Park, MD, Dr. Analisa Cross Cooper (Tony Cooper) of Waxhaw, NC and Rona M. Cross of Matthews, NC.   Other survivors also include 5 grandchildren and their spouses:  Alec (Garrin) Blake (Jay Blake), Nick Garrin, Justine Garrin, Anissa Cooper and Arynn Cooper; her brother-in-law, Hermon Williams, Sr., and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and numerous friends.


Visitations  to celebrate the life of Abbye  E.  Cross. will be held at 9:30am on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Brooks & Davis Funeral and Cremation Service, 825 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC, 28204, to be followed by a brief service at 11:00am to 11:30am.   Immediately after the service, the Interment will be conducted 1:00pm at the Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC.  Brooks and Davis Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the family.
